School-University Partnership Initiative (SUPI) Networking Event

School-University Partnership Initiative (SUPI) Networking Event

Are you a researcher or lecturer interested in engaging with local schools? Want to share your passion for research and your subject area with teachers and students? Want to develop your public engagement and outreach skills?

DATE: Wednesday 21 October, 4pm- 6:30pm
LOCATION: Sackville Street Building, University of Manchester
AIMS: An opportunity for researchers to meet with teachers interested in fostering links with their schools, and running collaborative research-led activities for secondary school and college students.

The School-University Partnership Initiative is an RCUK-funded project to create structured and strategic mechanisms for universities to work in partnership with secondary schools and FE colleges. This supports researchers’ direct engagement with students and brings contemporary and inspirational research contexts into formal and informal learning to enhance and enrich the curriculum.

In line with this, the SUPI team are holding a networking event at The University of Manchester on Wednesday 21st October from 4pm – 6:30pm to provide a space for researchers to meet with teachers interested in fostering links, and hosting research-led activities with their students. The event will include an overview of the SUPI project, with specific reference to collaborative projects between teachers and researchers, and with the main focus being a networking session. The expectation is that teachers and researchers will gain new contacts at the event, and come away with ideas for developing collaborative, engaging, school-based projects together. We ran a SUPI Networking Event in 2014 and many partnerships have since developed between researchers and teachers.

If you are interested in coming along to this event, please complete the online registration of interest survey by Monday 28th September.
PhD students, postdocs, lecturers etc all welcome.

Researchers are asked to provide an ‘elevator pitch’ to briefly summarise their research focus to attendees, as this will be provided to teachers in advance in a hand-out. We would also like researchers to submit keywords about their research, to further help signpost teachers to relevant researchers. We would expect researchers to come to the event with information about their research and their areas of interest, including visual representations if possible (conference posters, images of research etc). It would be worth considering if possible how your research can link into and add value the school curriculum, however the teachers should be able to discuss this with you at the event.

There will be the opportunity to attend an optional briefing session on Wed 8 October, 4pm-5pm for researchers in advance of the event, and further details will be circulated soon. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact Fiona Lynch.

Play a part in The Big Bang Fair 2016!

Inspire thousands of future scientists and engineers: play your part in The Big Bang Fair 2016!

We have launched a nationwide call for activity providers, science communicators, companies, education institutions and show organisers to play a part in next year’s Big Bang Fair that takes place at the NEC in Birmingham from 16-19 March 2016.

Celebrating its eighth year in 2016, The Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair brings together the STEM community in a collective effort to inspire over 55,000 young people and 12,000 of their teachers and parents across four days each March.

The Big Bang Fair is a unique opportunity to inspire thousands of young people to pursue a career in science or engineering. We want The Fair to offer those young people the biggest and best range of hands-on STEM activities, interactive stands, workshops, theatre shows, busking and competition showcases. We’d love to hear from organisations that have worked with us before or are new to the Big Bang Fair and would like to play their part.

For more information and to express an interest in playing a part in The Big Bang Fair 2016, go to: www.thebigbangfair.co.uk/activities.

Help us strengthen healthcare science communications – short survey

The AHCS is asking professional bodies, organisations and networks to complete a short survey about their communications channels to help determine how well existing communications reach the 50,000 individuals working across healthcare science.

We’d be really grateful if you could help us by getting the appropriate person from your organisation to complete a short online survey at http://www.ahcs.ac.uk/CommsSrv15

This should only take a couple of minutes to complete and we are looking to get as many responses as possible by the end of July 2015.

We hope the results will help inform what should be done to strengthen the existing communications and the connections between organisations. Please do share this survey within your own networks so we can get as robust an evidence base as possible.

Likewise, please do pass this email on to the best person in your area if you’re not currently involved in running a local healthcare science network.

Many thanks for your help.
