What are healthcare scientists doing out in primary care / community? Examples needed!

As you may know the Five Year Forward View has set out a clear direction of travel for the NHS. Healthcare scientists have a vital role to play in redesigning care and service provision with the diagnostic, therapeutic and scientific services provided and it is vital to promote the services that are provided out in Primary Care and the community to the wider NHS to ensure that healthcare scientists are at the centre of any new models of care that emerge.

Helen Liggett, North West Healthcare Science Workforce Lead, is currently working with the national CSO team to gather information from all healthcare science services to see what healthcare scientists are currently involved in and would be very interested to hear about extended services in the community or where healthcare scientists are supporting others to provide services in GP Practices / Ambulance service / self -testing / POCT / (or indeed any other examples).

Helen would also like to set up a network of service transformation champions nationally that can help spread best practice and would like to know if you would like to be involved in this exciting programme of work.

Please send Helen a simple outline of what you are doing and she will be back in touch to delve deeper and potentially develop case studies to promote your department.

PLEASE SEND AS MANY EXAMPLES AS YOU CAN TO helen.liggett@srft.nhs.uk

Call for SEERIH STEM Ambassadors – working with primary schools (Apply by 8 May 2015)

*Opportunity for postgraduate students and academic members of staff*

Be part of an innovative educational project!

Would you like to share your research and expertise with young learners in Greater Manchester primary schools?

Are you looking to enhance your communication skills in an engaging and relevant way, supporting schools in the local area?

The Science & Engineering Education Research and Innovation Hub (SEERIH), in partnership with the Central Widening Participation Team and the Museum of Science & Industry, is looking to recruit several STEM Ambassadors to take part in a short project working with primary schools in Greater Manchester from April-August 2015.

This is a fantastic opportunity, open to postgraduate students and academic members of staff, to share your research and passion for studying a STEM discipline, whilst developing your communication and presentation skills, and supporting primary school teachers to enliven and inspire children when learning Science, Design Technology, Computer Science and Maths.

Successful applicants will be asked to commit 3-4 days within the project. This will involve taking part in a bespoke STEM Ambassador Training Programme before collaborating with an innovative primary teacher to complete a short school placement in a local primary school during the summer term. Following the placement ambassadors will help evaluate the effectiveness of the training and the placement.

Full details of the opportunity are available here including how to make an application.  The deadline to apply is Friday 8 May 2015.

MAHSE Consortium to deliver doctoral award for HSST

Health Education England (HEE) have announced that the Manchester Academy for Healthcare Scientist Education (MAHSE) consortium has been awarded the contract to deliver the doctoral level academic programme for Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST) after being selected through a rigorous tendering and assessment process.

The MASHE HSST consortium consists of the following partner institutions:

  • University of Manchester
  • Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Aston University
  • University of Liverpool

The innovative consortium model will allow the inclusion of new provider partners where required.

HSSTis a five year practice based education and research programme supported by an underpinning doctoral level academic programme and where appropriate, Medical Royal College qualifications.

This doctoral level academic programme will formalise and facilitate the development of Clinical Scientists through HSST as they:

  • Create and interpret new knowledge, through original research scholarship requiring advanced academic enquiry;
  • Systematically acquire and apply a substantial body of scientific and clinical knowledge at the forefront of their specialism and embrace the future scientific and technology advances within the field;
  • Systematically acquire, develop and apply the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment as a Consultant Clinical Scientist or equivalent, requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and taking largely autonomous initiative in complex and unpredictable situations;
  • Develop the knowledge, skills, experience, behaviours and attitudes required of a clinical leader in an evolving and rapidly developing health and life sciences sector.

The selection and assessment process has been led by Health Education West Midlands (HEWM), as the lead commissioner for healthcare science education and training. HEWM will continue to work with the MAHSE consortium to ensure the successful delivery of this flagship healthcare science training programme.

New opportunities for Healthcare Scientists

The Manchester Academy for Healthcare Scientist Education (MAHSE) is currently developing a new funded career development programme, which will offer healthcare scientists in the North West region the opportunity to become further involved in research and innovation focused projects. More than £250,000 will be available through the programme to enable research projects carried out in conjunction with a Higher Education Institute, commercial enterprise or research active service laboratory or department. The programme will be formerly launched later in 2015.

In order to develop the programme to meet the requirements of the North West, MAHSE is looking to build a North West Healthcare Research Directory. The directory will identify active healthcare scientists and research trends in the region, and will help MAHSE to:

  • understand how research and innovation is developed in the Healthcare Scientist setting
  • identify current innovative projects involving Healthcare Scientists
  • identify centres of innovative activity
  • develop relationships with research and innovation champions within the Healthcare Scientist community

The output from this project will enable MAHSE to learn from examples of good practice and develop a community of interested and active researchers with which they can engage with through the funded career programme.

We need you!

We are looking for healthcare scientists who are currently involved in innovative research activities outside the remit of their normal day-today role to complete a short survey. The survey, which should take approximately 10 minutes, will help us to identify:

  • where innovative research activities are being undertaken
  • in what disciplines
  • by whom
  • whether commercial or academic partners are involved

COMPLETE THE SURVEY NOW  http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/2014729/MAHSE-Research-Innovation-Survey

Weekly prize draw

Each week one person who has completed the survey will be selected at random to win a £50 Amazon gift voucher. The draw will take place on Friday afternoons whilst the survey is open and winners will be notified using the contact details provided.

Your area of research can fall anywhere on the healthcare research spectrum, from Life Sciences through to Physical and Physiological Sciences. Your data will only be used internally by MAHSE and will not be shared.
