MAHSE healthcare R&I scoping project

MAHSE healthcare Research and Innovation (R&I) scoping project

TRUSTECH has recently carried out a scoping exercise on behalf of Manchester Academy for Healthcare Scientist Education (MAHSE) to understand the levels of research and innovation (R&I) activity in the North West region.

MAHSE have been commissioned by Health Education North West to develop and expand R&I within the healthcare science community, which they intend to do so through a secondment programme. They enlisted TRUSTECH’s assistance as the innovation experts for the NHS in the North West.

The first phase of the project was to conduct a survey to:

  • Identify current R&I projects,
  • Understand how R&I is developing,
  • Identify current centres of excellence,
  • Develop relationships with R&I champions.

The survey was co-ordinated by TRUSTECH on behalf of MAHSE between February and March 2015.

Utilising its extensive list of NHS and external contacts, TRUSTECH received 82 completed responses from individuals working in healthcare scientist roles. The responses were spread across the region, with the majority being based in Greater Manchester (61%), followed by Cheshire and Merseyside (33%) and Cumbria and Lancashire (6%).

TRUSTECH also carried out a number of face-to-face and telephone interviews to gain a more in-depth insight from key individuals/leaders.

A full outline of the project, results of the survey and recommendations are now available here: Research and Innovation report.

Further details about the overall project are available on the MAHSE website

R&I secondment programme

The report provides MAHSE with an up-to-date picture of R&I activity in the healthcare sector, allowing them to identify fundamental elements required for a successful secondment programme.

MAHSE and TRUSTECH are jointly hosting a webinar to provide information about these findings and are inviting healthcare scientists to attend.

The webinar also aims to elicit input from healthcare scientists about the secondment programme’s development. Healthcare Scientists who join us will have the opportunity to ask questions about the survey or the secondment programme and also register their interest to participate further in the near future.

With the webinar, we also aim to engage with healthcare scientists outside of the North West as another key aim for this project is to encourage the whole of the UK to think about healthcare research and provide opportunities to work together to develop an effective national workforce. So please do share details of the webinar with your friends and colleagues in other areas.

We will be joined by Fiona Carragher, Deputy Chief Scientific Officer, NHS England, who will provide a short introduction and highlight the work being done in this area at a national level.

The webinar will take place on Tuesday 17th November 2015 at 1pm and will last for approximately 30 minutes. Please register by visiting: http://mahse-webinar.eventbrite.com

HSST Equivalence – Early Implementers Programme

The AHCS (Academy for Healthcare Science) has expanded numbers in the first wave of equivalence process due to demand.

The equivalance process allows the most senior clinical scientists to achieve formal recognition for their skills and experience. The pilot currently covers a limited number of specialisms.

You can find out more about the Early Implementers phase, the standards and preparation for full roll out of HSS equivalence in Spring 2016 here.

All applications for equivalence are made against the AHCS Standards of Proficiency (Sop) for HSSR, regardless of the specialism or role.

The Applicants Guide covers:

  • what documentation to provide.
  • preparing your portfolio.
  • example evidence, including an example mapping template.
  • details of the way in which assessments are made.

To achieve equivalence, applicants must provide a portfolio of quality evidence that has comprehensively mapped againt each of the 16 standards (and substandards) of the AHCS HSSR Standards of Proficiency.

Patient Involvement in Clinical Science Education Programmes

Do you want to influence how the future NHS workforce thinks about patient-centred care?
Do you want to share your story with NHS-trainees?
Are you passionate about patients having a voice within their healthcare service?

MAHSE are seeking some new lay representatives for their programmes.

Patients are at the heart of everything the NHS does and therefore the experiences of patients are an important aspect of the training that new healthcare professionals receive. The NHS workforce needs to know what patients think about the service they provide.  The next generation of NHS workers need to value the views and experiences of patients from the start of their training.

MAHSE is seeking up to eight new patient representatives for each of its Programme Committees which meet in Manchester or Liverpool 3-4 times each year. These roles attract a nominal fee (£18.81/hour) and all reasonable expenses will be paid.

There are many ways that you can get involved, from providing a patient view of an academic lecture, helping deliver classroom sessions, being involved in the assessment of students or assisting the programme team in evaluating the course.

To apply please email Rebecca at admin@mahse.co.uk with a short paragraph (up to a maximum of 500 words) stating why you are interested in applying and what you think you could bring to the role.

We will be holding an informal information event with the academic staff involved in the programme and current lay representatives during mid-November.  Any applicants will be contacted with further details, so that you can come and chat to the team and find out more about the role.

If you have any further questions please telephone Rebecca on 0161 3062621

The closing date for applications is Friday 23rd October 2015

If you live in the Greater Manchester area and are interested in getting involved in other opportunities, Friends of MAHSC (Manchester Academic Health Science Centre) are currently recruiting new members.

Friends of MAHSC receive regular updates on the advances being made in research, education and patient care across MAHSC as well as opportunities to input and influence MAHSC’s work.

If you are interested, please find out more from the MAHSC website; http://www.mahsc.ac.uk/for-patients-and-the-public/.
