If you are a current trainee on the STP or HSST programme and have an urgent problem, please contact your Programme Administrator, Programme Director, or University contact. Higher Specialist Scientific Training in the Life Sciences Joint statement

A new partnership between Manchester’s universities and the Royal College of Pathologists has been formed to bring academic and professional training together on the clinical scientist doctoral programmes.

Following liaison between the Royal College of Pathologists and Manchester Academy for Healthcare Scientist Education (MAHSE), a finalised agreement was signed on 6 July 2016.  The agreed Memorandum of Understanding is between the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the Royal College of Pathologists and represents a partnership for the provision of the Life Sciences theme within the Doctor of Clinical Science (DClinSci) programmes as part of the Higher Specialist Scientist Training Programme (HSST).

Information for STP Training Officers

The National School of Healthcare Science (NSHCS) have published a helpbook for training centres with students on the Scientific Training Programme (STP). The helpbook gives advice for the whole STP from planning for the arrival of an STP trainee, to maintaining supervision through to their final exams. The helpbook will be invaluable to new supervisors but also a useful aid to those those seeking continuous improvement in their training.

Changing the Leadership Culture in the English National Health Service

The Alliance Manchester Business School working in a consortium led by KPMG and including The University of Birmingham, Leo Learning, Cumberlege Eden and Partners and others – together with the NHS Leadership Academy have been named Gold winners in this year’s EFMD Excellence in Practice Awards.

The European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) act as a catalyst to enhance excellence in management education and development globally, and the EFMD Excellence in Practice Awards (EiP) recognise outstanding and impactful learning & development partnerships in the domains of Leadership, Professional, Talent and Organisation Development.

MSc Genomic Medicine Faculty Symposium

The University of Manchester are working with the Genomics Education Programme to deliver a Faculty Symposium for the MSc Genomic Medicine on Friday 9th September 2016. The Symposium is designed to develop a community of practice within the Genomics England workforce.

The Symposium will include updates from Professor Sue Hill, Chief Scientific Officer for England and Professor Mark Caulfield, Chief Scientist for Genomics England. The keynote speech will be delivered by Professor Bill Newman, Lead of the Greater Manchester Genomic Medicine Centre. Those currently studying on the MSc Genomic Medicine are invited to present posters or talks at the event and share their learning insights.

Resources on public involvement in research

The Health Research Authority (HRA)  and INVOLVE have published two new resources on public involvement.  The first resource provides evidence of how public involvement helps to make research more ethical and produce better outcomes. The second resource considers what aspects of patient and public involvement in a research project are addressed by Research Ethics Committees when researchers apply for ethical review.

International Festival of Public Health 2016

The International Festival of Public Health will be held on 1st July 2016. The Festival, organised by Manchester Urban Collaboration on Health, in association with the Manchester Medical Society Public Health Forum was formerly called the Festival of Public Health UK, Now in its fifth year, it has been renamed to reflect the growing international audience.
